Orange Peel and Orlando Memory

Orange Peel is a great way to improve from the inside. Constantly having new ideas posted and knowing there is a place available for ideas keeps the library having an alive feeling, instead of feeling stagnant.

Orlando Memory is also a large collaborative work. Much like the crime data base that was started in Brazil (from that 16 min speech from last week), it is something that is too large and cumbersome to gather all the information. It is simply better (and more authentic I might add) to build it from scratch from people who actually live in Orlando. Otherwise, special interest groups, businesses, and all those other people with agendas to push will put a slant on it in order to turn them a profit. This way businesses can add photos, but they are equal shareholders with all the other regular Joe's out there. :)

Opening Documents from Iphone

Awessome! I found the application called "think free." It allows you to most importantly view PDFs on your Iphone anytime you want for free. I've been trying to find a fast (free) way to do this for weeks! Great to know, great to share with patrons who are coming to use our free wireless via their iphones.

I really liked the lecture from Learn 2.0. It's true basically what he's saying. I have noticed a change in my peer group that is so drastic that I can't just chalk it up to us getting older. I rarely watch tv. Me and most of my friends watch shows like House and The Office. Most times, we just watch The Office from the computer! I am never "wasting time" in front of the television, but I have been known to Facebook troll for longer than I would like to document. :) I do love multitasking, something that I feel my generation has grown up thriving on. My mother never got that, never will get it, and still continues to be annoyed by how productive I am. She says I never relax or slow down cus I'm always on the computer or the phone or juggling multiple activities and online conversations. But that's kind of how we unwind...it's just different.

Chain Chain Change

I think in a lot of ways we are already moving in the directon that the DAvinci article spoke of. We are already creating experiences for patrons who come to the library. We are also already working on making information and technology more accessible to patrons where they are, and wherever they may be going (playaways for patrons on the go and in a small package too!).

The Southeast branch is definitely more of a cultural, community center than a library. Yes we do have books, but that is about where it ends in the library definition. We have computers, games, video games, movies, music, new ways to retrieve books, computer classes, and programs to further move our patrons along in adapting to new technology.

Because the library does meet the "compressed needs" of so many patrons, the patrons are more "well-connected" with each other, which is the part of our mission statement that stuck out to me the most! :)

Ps---I LOVE the idea of slimming down and eventually getting rid of keyboards. Even now typing on an old desktop keyboard compared to my silent keyboard on my laptop is a struggle. My hands are hurting from having to push down these keys! *whine*

Open Source

Since you joined OCLS, how has technology changed the way you access, use or provide information? As technology makes information more open source, how do you see our role, as a library, in the future? Describe it for us in your blog.

I think that the library will continue to move away from being stagnant, store houses of information toward more open sourced retrieval locations for information.

I have definitely had to become more aware of online resources and particularly our databases here at the library in order to fully provide all the resources the library has for patrons.

Our role will be to know how to locate information, whether we are the librarian with a Master's in Library Science or a shelver of books. We all will have the unique opportunity to bridge the information gap to get people the information they are looking for.

Health Wellness and Technology

I want a Wii FIT!

I was really excited when I saw again how the Nikefit works. My father loves to run and push his current records, he also loves Nike shoes. I wonder if he knows about this...if not, I'm going early Christmas shopping for him because I think he would really benefit from this. Me? Not so much. I don't run. haha. :)

I'm baaack!

I'm on the fence between a digital native and a digital immigrant. I'm just trying to tilt that balance a little farther toward the "native" side. Last course (learn 2.0) I came away with a ton of technological goodies that I now use on a fairly regular basis (like lastfm and Meebo). I'm looking for more goodies that exist out there! :) --Littlest Librarian

Week #10: Already!?

I plan to use my Mp3 player to listen to new music. My boyfriend has already agreed to load up new songs for me from bands i have never heard of. We decided to do this after looking at lastfm and other music sites that help us find artists similar to ones we already like.

I would also want to download some Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich. I JUST got into the series and the series started in 1994 so I am WAY behind. I'm apparently not alone because when I went to request the first couple of books, they were all checked out or in transit. Getting the book in audio format guarantees we never run out of copies AND I get it instantly (almost, considering my connection speed) from home!!! SWEEEEEETTTTT!

I love telling patrons about e-audiobooks!
